In between commission work I decided to work on a little personal project. I wanted to paint a relatively simple figure, without too many details but some space for freehand and of course some elaborate NMM. So I choose this mini by Games Workshop. I know it has been painted many, many times, by some amazing painters. So it will be hard to come up with something different, but I have an idea that I will share later.
For now I started with painting the skin. I wanted the skin to look a little unnatural, so I decided with a purple base. I used GW liche purple and Vallejo Basic skintone, in a 1:4 mix as the basecoat and then slowly painted until I reached pure basic skintone. After that I added some Vallejo Light flesh to the mix for the highest highlights. The shades were painted by adding GW Catachan green to the basic mix, and a little extra liche purple. Then a final shadow was created by adding just the slightest bit of black to the previous shadow.
This is the first time I tried painting the highlights first, then going back to blending the midtones and then afterwards painting the shadows. For this, I did start with a little darker base colour then I would normally would. But I must admit, I like this method, I feel that is gives me a little more control when compared to starting with the basetone and shadows first.
Anyway, too much talking 🙂 Here is the first WIP picture. I don’t have a decent camera here, so the colours are a bit contorted. In fact, the skin is a lot less warm of colour. Ahh well, I just felt like showing you something new finally, even though a lot still needs to be done. I will focus on the face soon, see if I can add some pretty girl make-up 😉
